Angela Porter, MFT, CATC, CMT
Somatic Psychotherapy, Holistic Counseling and Consultation
Angela has been a professional counselor since 1991 and a Breema practitioner since 1998.
She specializes in holistic behavioral therapy—group, family, individual counseling, and training for therapists.
Treating addiction and co-occuring issues has, in her experience, meant treating trauma. Treating trauma effectively means including the body in therapy, which is where traumatic memory is stored. Educating clients to work collaboratively with her to effect their own healing is essential.
Angela trained at the Breema Center in Oakland, studied Gestalt, Body-Centered, and Somatic Therapy at Esalen Institute, and Counseling Psychology at Berkeley’s Wright Institute. Facilitating connection between body and mind is central to her work and treatment philosophy.
Formerly a program director at the New Bridge Foundation’s residential substance abuse treatment program in Berkeley, CA, she incorporated somatic practice and body-centered meditation into the treatment curriculum with great success, working primarily with veterans, young adults and their families, couples, recovering professionals, formerly incarcerated men and women reclaiming their lives, and clients with co-occurring mental health and substance abuse issues.
Currently she is a group facilitator at Bayside Marin’s substance abuse treatment program in San Rafael, and maintains a private practice, in Oakland and San Rafael. She continue to travel internationally, teaching Breema workshops for therapists, social workers, nurses, MDs, midwives, teachers, and other healing professionals.
